Arturo Alanis, who was one of the five Juarenses painters selected to exhibit recently in Oaxaca, opened his show IMAGO at Centro Municipal de las Artes (CEMA) last Thursday night.
Alanis studied design and in some of his earlier works he played with balancing forms against each other as much as against color. In these works the color is paramount. He told me, he begins with color and then adds the form. In this case the form is an evocation of trees.
What is particularly appealing about these is that the color is intense, but more muted than shiny, subdivided by subtle lines which carve half circles through the pieces. In front of these rise the vertical form which is less an actual representation of a tree than its evocation. Without knowing anything about the idea behind the piece one feels these forms as organic-breathing, the intense color playing off against the monochrome background. In the case of Tiempo , there is an ochre background playing against a green stalk. In Fortalezo there is red and orange in play.
The semi circular lines are designed to unify the whole. This is particularly the case with the title piece IMAGO which consists of four panels (Quadiptych?). They run unbroken throughout all four panels; one half moon enclosing the other.
A satisfying and appealing show making use of colors too often abused by many trying to make “Southwestern” paintings. Here there is a simply a play of single form against color to satisfying results. David Sokolec
Arturo Alanis, uno de las cinco pintors seleccionado a exposicionar recientemente en Oaxaca, abrio su exposicion IMAGO a la Centro Municipal de las Artes Jueves noche.
Alanis estudie diseno y unos de sus mas temprano obras juegando con una balance del formes contra otros formes ademas contro el color. En estes cuadros, el color es la mas importante. Me diga que empiezar con el color entonces agregue las formes. En este caso, la forme es una evocacion de arboles.
Lo que es particularmente atrayente es que la color es intenso pero mas debil que brillante, subdivido para las lines subtilo que talle semi circulos en la muestra. En el centro subida la forma vertical que es menos una representacion actuel del una arbol y mas una evocaction. Sin conociementon de la thema de la obra, hay una senso que estos formas respire-como una ser organic, la color intensivo juegando contra la color monochromo en el fondo.
En “Tiempo” hay una fondo amarillo juegando contra una tallo verde; en “Fortaleza” hay naranja y rojo juegando. Las linas semi-circulo estan designado para unir la totalidad. Particuliaremente en la caso del la obra IMAGO que consiste des quatro entrpanos (Quadyptich?). Los linas corre sin rompiendo en todo los entrepanos, una lina semicircular incluyendo los otros.
Una exposicion muy atrayente usando colors effectivemente que otros demesiado abuso en tratar a pintar cuadros typico “Southwest”. Aqui es simplemente una juego del color contra forme con resultos muy agradable.-David Sokolec
