Lorenzo Lotto cleans up nice

After what is something like two years (OK, a year and a half), the Lorenzo Lotto painting Portrait of a Man with Allegorical Symbols, a part of the Kress collection,  sent to New York for cleaning has come back and is again hanging proudly in the EPMA gallery. The cleaning has made a significant difference. The symbols are more easily and clearly delineated and the face seems much lighter than before.  It turns out that the students at NYU, who did the cleaning under curatorial experts, discovered that one of the symbols had “inpainting” designed to turn the “moon” symbol into one of “earth” so they had to remove the paint and now it is back to how Lotto had intended.  -david sokolec
